How long does a Chinese export licence take?
Where a licence is required, it is applied for per shipment and the review takes months rather than weeks in practice. Timelines depend on the item, the end user and the stated end use. Ask your supplier whether a licence is needed and whether they have obtained one before — not after — you commit to a delivery date.

Export control used to be somebody else’s problem — defence primes, semiconductor firms, chemical traders. It is now a scheduling risk for ordinary manufactured goods, because controls have extended to materials that sit deep inside everyday products: magnets, certain battery inputs, rare-earth-derived components. What to ask your supplier, in writing
- Does any component or material in this product require an export licence?
- Have you obtained that licence before, for this item, to this destination?
- What end-use documentation do you need from me, and in what form?
- What is your realistic lead time including licensing — not excluding it?
- What happens to my deposit if a licence is refused?
That last question is the one buyers skip and later regret. Settle it in the contract before the deposit moves, not in an email after a refusal.
